Free association is a foundational technique in psychoanalytic therapy where the client is encouraged to say whatever comes to mind, with little or no censorship. The idea is to lower the ego’s defenses that keep unconscious thoughts hidden, so thoughts, memories, feelings, and wishes can surface. As the client speaks, the therapist listens for patterns, connections, repetitions, or slips of the tongue that reveal underlying unconscious material, such as unresolved conflicts or repressed wishes.
